Which paint should I use?

For an opaque appearance on raw / unpainted / uncoated masonry with normal absorbency (brick, concrete, most stucco, stone, etc.) – Beeckosil is ideally suited for your application. It is a traditional unmodified silicate paint which requires a raw absorbent mineral surface for proper bonding. No primer is required as long as your surface meets the above criteria. Beeckosil may also be used over some previously painted surfaces if first primed with BEECK Bonding Coat. The first coat of Beeckosil should be thinned with BEECK Fixative to counteract the natural absorbency of the substrate. Typically 12oz of Fixative per gallon is sufficient, but this can be adjusted up or down depending on the absorbency of the substrate, with a maximum of 24oz of Fixative per gallon when applying to an extremely absorbent substrate. A typical application is 2 coats.

For an opaque appearance on mixed surfaces, previously painted surfaces, surfaces with lower absorbency or for projects where absolute ease of use is desired – Renosil is the product we recommend. It is a single-component silicate paint and is water thinable (up to 12oz per gallon), able to be used on restoration projects and new masonry alike. No primer is required for most applications. This is our most popular product. A typical application is 2 coats.

Both Beeckosil and Renosil are available in Fine and Coarse finishes. The Coarse finish has added aggregate and mineral fillers and can be used as an optional first coat to visually equalize the appearance of a textured surface, fill in hairline cracks and other small inconsistencies / imperfections in the surface. The Fine product is typically used as the top / finish coat regardless if Coarse or Fine is used for the first coat.

For a semi-translucent stained appearance – Concrete/Stone Glaze is the correct product. It is thinned with BEECK Base-V (Base-V is a concentrated product and should be thinned in equal parts with water prior to use) and has immense design flexibility. By altering the thinning ratio, Concrete/Stone Glaze can be applied nearly opaque to completely change the color of the surface or applied nearly translucent to add a subtle veil of color. A typical application is 2-3 thin coats, however more coats can be applied as necessary to achieve your desired appearance. This product requires a bit of artistic ability for best results, but with a little practice is not a difficult product to apply. From faux finishes to layering different colors, and more – the artistic and design possibilities are endless when using Concrete/Stone Glaze.

Gypsum surfaces such as gypsum-based plaster or interior wall board should be primed with BEECK Gypsum Primer prior to the first coat of Beeckosil or Concrete/Stone Glaze.

All products have an extremely low VOC content of ≤ 10 g / L and can be used for both exterior and interior applications.

How much do I need for my project?

This is a good question and a difficult one to answer as every project is unique, but here are some general guidelines for various common substrates:

  • Brick of average texture: 200-275 sq.ft. per gallon per coat

  • Brick or Terra Cotta (very smooth): 250-300 sq.ft. per gallon per coat

  • Brick (heavily textured): 100-150 sq.ft. per gallon per coat (extremely textured brick may see consumption as low as 50-75 sq.ft. per gallon per coat)

  • CMU, poured concrete, cast concrete and similar masonry surfaces of average texture: 200-275 sq.ft. per gallon per coat

  • CMU (split face) and other heavily textured masonry surfaces: 150-200 sq.ft. per gallon per coat

  • Stucco, plaster or EIFS/ETICS of average texture: 225-275 sq.ft. per gallon per coat

  • Stucco, plaster or EIFS/ETICS (very smooth): 275-325 sq.ft. per gallon per coat

  • Stucco (heavily textured): 100-200 sq.ft. per gallon per coat (extremely textured stucco such as a rough pebble dash may see consumption as low as 50 sq.ft. per gallon per coat)

  • Fiber cement board and GFRC: 300-350 sq.ft. per gallon per coat

  • Interior wall board: 300-350 sq.ft. per gallon per coat

  • Natural stone (smooth finish limestone, brownstone, marble, etc.): 200-300 sq.ft. per gallon per coat

  • Natural stone (rough finish limestone, fieldstone, sandstone, etc.): 100-200 sq.ft. per gallon per coat

Please note: Absorbency also contributes to consumption. Heavily absorbent surfaces may see consumption increase by 20% or more. BEECK Coarse products also have consumption approximately 10% greater than Fine products. The coverage estimates listed above are only guidelines. Every project is unique. The only way to precisely predict application rates is with a trial application, measuring the actual consumption of your substrate.

If your substrate is not listed above or would like project specific guidance, please contact us.

How should your products be applied?

For most projects, we recommend application by brush or roller. Brushing gives a delightful “old world” aesthetic where rolling gives a more uniform “modern” appearance. For brick or stucco with above average texture, a brushed application is especially advantageous as the mechanical action of the brush does the best job filling in all the texture and irregularities on the surface.

While our Fine products can be sprayed, commercial quality equipment capable of spraying a 0.027 or larger tip size is required, and there are other considerations such as securely protecting all nearby glass as well as increased waste factor to keep in mind. Coarse products cannot be sprayed.
